Black gold – Keep it golden!
With hundreds of classic mineral oils on the market, it’s easy to get lost in the details of which blend is best. That’s a conversation best enjoyed over a cup of tea in our workshop, where we can advise you on the exact specification your car requires.
What matters most, especially for cars used only occasionally, is this: keep the oil fresh. Regular changes are the simplest, most effective way to protect performance, reliability, and value.
Surely a modern oil would be better?
Modern synthetic oils are engineered to perform across vast temperature ranges, covering tens of thousands of miles with minimal degradation. Impressive as that sounds, it simply doesn’t translate to classic motoring.
Engine design has advanced dramatically over the last two decades, and today’s oils are tailored to highly specific parameters, none of which belong in a classic engine bay. In most cases, modern oils are far too thin, prone to seeping past gaskets, and incapable of offering the correct protection where it matters most.
What happens to mineral oil over time and use?
As mineral oil degrades, it begins to separate, thinning out while leaving behind a thick sludge that clings to engine surfaces. Over time, this sludge blocks vital oil ways and the sump strainer, leading to reduced oil pressure and premature engine wear.
The biggest threat comes when a car is left unused. Condensation builds inside the engine, accelerating oil breakdown and increasing the risk of damage.
That’s why our Classic Oils are blended specifically with occasional use in mind. Their specialist additives help preserve performance during lay-ups or winter storage.
Paired with annual oil changes and the use of Engine Cleaner, this approach keeps your engine clean, free-flowing, and protected, dramatically improving performance, efficiency, and longevity.
How much does it cost?
The guide prices below give a clear idea of what a standard oil change costs. They are based on popular classics from four-cylinder MG Bs and Beetles, to six-cylinder E-Types and 911s, Rover and Ford V8s, and even V12 Jaguars such as the XJS.
For comparison, we use the manufacturer’s recommended lubricant specification and the original oil filter. The greatest influence on cost is the volume of oil required and the specific grade used.
All prices are fully inclusive of labour, parts, lubricants, disposal, and VAT. If your car has particular requirements, we are always happy to advise.
