Classic Car Coolant Change
Fresh coolant not only improves engine efficiency but also protects against rust and sludge build-up. This preventative care dramatically extends the life of key components such as the radiator, thermostat, and water pump, ensuring lasting reliability.
All our servicing is carried out using Millers Classic or Performance Antifreeze Fluids to the specification required by the individual vehicle.
Keeping cool about antifreeze
Coolant is just as vital to your engine’s longevity as oil, yet it is often overlooked during routine servicing. Like oil, it degrades with age, but it also evaporates. In older cars without expansion tanks, it can even escape onto the floor when the engine runs hot. Topping up with water may seem harmless, but over time it dilutes the coolant mixture, reducing its effectiveness and leaving your engine vulnerable to overheating, corrosion, and premature wear.
What to use
Not all coolants are created equal. For most pre-1980 classics, a traditional green or blue coolant is recommended. Our Classic Antifreeze, based on Monoethylene Glycol, is specifically blended for heritage engines offering protection down to –25°C while safeguarding against corrosion and wear.
On a more modern cars there is a larger range of coolant types to OEM spec. When you book your car in we can check the type required against our database and advise you.
Choosing the Right Coolant
| Type | Best For | Key Features | Why Not for Classics? |
| Green / Blue (Monoethylene Glycol) | Pre-1980 classic cars | Protects to –25°C, corrosion inhibitors, safe for heritage metals | ✅ Recommended for classics |
| OAT (Organic Acid Technology) | Modern cars (post-1990s) | Long-life, designed for aluminium radiators | ❌ Can damage copper, brass, solder, and cast iron |
| HOAT (Hybrid OAT) | Newer performance cars | Blend of OAT with silicates, extended life | ❌ Incompatible with all classic systems |
When should it be changed?
As part of our Classic Car Service Schedule, we test coolant concentration annually and replace it every two years.
Coolant is more than just temperature control. It is also a rust inhibitor. Fresh coolant slows internal corrosion, protecting the engine and radiator while preserving your vehicle’s cooling performance. The newer the coolant, the greater the protection.
Is there anything better than standard antifreeze?
Yes — Waterless coolant offers several advantages:
- Boils at 180°C, meaning the system runs without pressure
- Greatly reduces the risk of head gasket and hose failure
- Prevents internal engine corrosion, as the product is inert
- A true “life product” — it never requires changing
However, it is important to note that waterless coolant should never be used to disguise a pre-existing issue.. It does mask marginal cooling problems by allowing the engine to run hotter, this is not a solution. At Classic Collective, we use waterless coolant where appropriate, but only as part of a properly maintained system.
Standard Coolant vs. Waterless Coolant
| Feature | Standard Coolant | Waterless Coolant |
| Boiling Point | ~100°C | 180°C |
| System Pressure | Pressurised | Non-pressurised |
| Corrosion Protection | Acts as a rust inhibitor (must be changed every 2 years) | Inert – no internal corrosion |
| Service Life | Replace every 2 years | Lifetime product (no change required) |
| Risk of Failures | Normal risk of gasket/hose wear under pressure | Reduced risk thanks to low pressure |
| Best Use | Most classics in regular use | Specialist applications — not to mask existing cooling issues |
How much does it cost?
Most coolant changes can be completed in an hour, meaning the cost is rarely more than £150. The final price is determined by the quantity of antifreeze required.
We charge £8.95 per litre of 50/50 mix (antifreeze and distilled water), plus VAT. This includes safe disposal of your old coolant, a process that alone accounts for around £1.50 per litre.
