Engine and Transmission Rebuilds

Rebuilding performance, preserving heritage

While major rebuilds are best avoided where possible, engines and gearboxes are mechanical components and over time, wear and poor maintenance can take their toll..  If you’re concerned about the health of your engine or transmission, our expert team can diagnose the issue and advise on the best course of action. From precision repairs to full rebuilds, we have the knowledge and experience to restore performance and reliability.

We can help!

Engine Health

Many owners fear their engine needs a rebuild — yet in most cases, a thorough service, carburettor rebuild, or ignition setup is all it takes to restore performance. In fact, fewer than 5% of the cars that come through Classic Collective genuinely require a full rebuild.

Before considering major work, there are several diagnostic tests that provide a clear picture of an engine’s condition without a strip-down. These include:

Sniff Test

Unflattering name aside, the sniff test is a simple way to check for exhaust gases in the coolant. A positive result usually indicates a head gasket issue, where exhaust gases are leaking into the cooling system through the waterways between the block and cylinder head.

Compression Test

A compression test measures how effectively each piston compresses the fuel–air mixture. On a worn engine, pressure escapes past the piston rings, valves, or the head gasket. As a guide:

  • 150 psi or more — excellent health for a road engine
  • 125 psi — acceptable
  • Around 100 psi — significant wear
  • Below 100 psi — likely major trouble

Leak down test

A leak-down test identifies precisely where compression is being lost. If pressure escapes through the valves, it may simply be a case of adjusting the clearances. If it escapes through the head, a top-end rebuild is likely required. Should the loss be traced to the piston rings, the solution is more involved often requiring a re-bore and new pistons.

Oil pressure

Consistent oil pressure across all engine speeds and temperatures is vital. Without proper lubrication, components overheat and wear rapidly. As a guide, most classics will show oil pressure fluctuating between 20 PSI when hot and idling to around 80 PSI when cold or under load.

Low oil pressure can stem from a variety of issues: from gummed-up oil galleries and clogged sumps to crankshaft wear or incorrect oil. Whatever the cause, it should never be ignored. Early investigation can prevent major damage.

At Classic Collective, we use specialist equipment to carry out a full suite of diagnostic tests in just a few hours. From there, we advise on the best course of action, whether that’s a simple adjustment, an in-house rebuild (with precision machining supported by our trusted partners), or referral to one of our specialist rebuild contacts.

Gearbox/Overdrive/Diff Health

Much like engines, gearboxes are often more robust than owners expect. Problems are more commonly caused by poor clutch adjustment, incorrect fluids, or worn gear linkages than by the gearbox itself.

A thorough test drive usually reveals the source of transmission issues with impressive accuracy. While gearbox and overdrive rebuilds are generally specialist work, we’ve built long-standing relationships with trusted companies who handle both manual and automatic units to the highest standard.

We can also assist with overdrive and differential issues, ensuring every part of your drivetrain performs as it should. Whatever the problem, get in touch and we’ll guide you to the right solution.
